EPCS Girls’ Volleyball and More
If you get the chance to see our EPCS Girls’ Volleyball team in action, you should take advantage of that! The girls played a double header on Tuesday and, although they lost both by a 3 – 1 margin, games were close and the young ladies represented our school well. Overhand serves were distributed in abundance, underhand serves went over when otherwise they had not yet, several bump, set, and over sequences were established, and smiles were plentiful. Score? Who cares about scores. We were having too much fun!!
Our team is a small one–8 players–and a young one–one seventh grader, five sixth graders, and two fifth graders (the youngest team I’ve ever had)–and a short one–tallest player is 5’ 4”. But it is also one of the liveliest, smileiest (is that a word?), supportive, and cooperative teams I’ve ever had. Each one listens to suggestions I give on technique and method, and each tries hard to make the necessary changes. I’m already looking forward to what the future will bring for these fine young ladies.
And what I appreciate as well is their desire to live (and play volleyball) as God’s children, for that is what and who they are! They understand what it means to support one another, to complement, even the other team members, when a ball is well-played. They understand that playing the game well means waaay more than what a score says.
We are blessed, here at EPCS, with the quality of our students, with the power of God’s Spirit in each of our students’ lives. Yes, we struggle with issues from time to time, with behavior situations, or with selfishness, or with (you fill in the blank). Sometimes life gets messy! But the Spirit roams these EPCS hallways and classrooms and playing courts and fields and offices and your homes, and that Spirit is in the hearts of these precious children. Sometimes God’s presence is just so obvious!
I am sitting in a double study with the students who are not in Band and Jazz Band. It is quiet here, very quiet, except for one of my ninth-grade students, who is carefully practicing her Pachelbel’s Canon guitar piece. We are all in awe of the beauty of the sound she is making. I, too, am in admiration of the talents of our students, some in their ability to play volleyball, some to write poetry, some to be so knowledgeable of history, some to be able to understand the relationship between “x’ and “y” in the slope y-intercept equation, some to make amazing art, some to play football at noon hour, some to be actors in drama, some to understand the moods and situations of others, some to realize how to apply their faith to actual day-to-day living, and this one, picking and strumming, making amazingly beautiful noise unto God, mistakes and all! We are God’s children and I for one praise God for that!!! Our God is greatly to be praised!
Again, if you get the chance to see our EPCS Girls’ Volleyball team in action, you should take advantage of that! But if you get the chance to come and visit our school, to sit in on and help with some of our classes, to experience our high schoolers, to have Hot Lunch with us on Wednesdays at noon, to just walk around in our halls and pray quietly for our school and for each of these hearts and for our finances and for, well for EPCS, then do that! Visit us. Come see who we are. We are a place of grace. We are where God’s children live and work, messy as it sometimes gets!. May God be praised!
